Top 15 announced for 2011 Singapore Entrepreneur of the Year Award

The Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (ASME)and Rotary Club of Singapore Friday announced the top 15 organisations for the Entrepreneur of the Year Award (EYA) 2011.
Among the companies are Epicentre Holdings, Trek2000 International, Link (THM) Holdings and Pacific Forest Products Pte Ltd.
The award, at 23 years, is the longest running that honours entrepreneurship in Singapore.
"This year, we see a lot of environmental-induced innovation. Companies have had to come up with innovative ways to cope with the more competitive business environment and the very high cost incurred to deliver their products or services. They are, in a way, forced to think out of the box and come up with solutions to do things cheaper so as to maintain their profitability," said Mr Kurt Wee, co-chairman of the award organising committee.
With more companies taking on a socially responsible outlook, a new judging criterion - environmental care - has been added.
Participants were assessed on the effectiveness of the environmentally-friendly initiatives implemented by their companies.
Mr Jason Chang, managing director of Pacific Forest Products Pte Ltd, said: "What happens when there is no more timber left? The future for us is to conduct research for a substitute for wood. We could, for example, develop a wood sustitute from natural fibre. It's a green product. So we don't have to cut down trees anymore. That will save our environment."
The 15 Top Entrepreneurs will meet a panel of judges on August 2 for final selection.
The overall winner and the sub-category award winners will be announced at an award ceremony next month.
